A recent report by Stacker compiled from the U.S. Census estimates that well over 125,000 citizens in the greater Columbus region speak very little English or use English as a second language. This represents more than 10% of the regional population. These numbers are growing yearly, and the trend is expected to continue.
Additionally, roughly 8% of the U.S. population experiences some level of visual impairment, and another 15% experiences some form of hearing impairment. Combining vision, hearing, and language barriers, the total number suggests that as many as one-third or more of our neighbors may face serious challenges navigating traditional websites and participating in the connected world.
To ensure equitable access for everyone, OMJCFC.org now provides an inclusive online experience that enables website visitors to access content and services barrier-free. The Recite Me assistive toolbar deployed on OMJCFC’s website provides screen reading functionality combined with an on-demand live translation feature offering over 100 languages, including 65 spoken out loud as text-to-speech.
